Federalism in Education Made Simple
The Association for Homeschooling/Vereniging vir Tuisonderwys posted this little animation with the statement that this story is just as applicable to South Africa. (www.tuisskolers.org)
Trial, error and the God complex
Facilitators, students, parents, departmental officials and other people should perhaps begin to consider the possibility that we might just actually not be gods afterall: we simply just don't know enough. We learn best by trial and error. The sooner we begin to accept this fact, the sooner we can actually start thinking of moving forward. (Please take note: the references made in this video to biological evolution, are not based upon any clinical, scientific, double-blind, observable, recorded, reproducible, proven facts. That's why it's still only called "the THEORY of evolution".)

OPTIONAL for IGCSE (Gr. 10 & 11):

UCLES / CUP
ISBN 9780521658553
2. IGCSE Mathematics
Karen Morrison
CUP
ISBN 9780521011136
(Cambridge-Endorsed)
The six COLP Modules are the minimum requirement (even though Morrison is Cambridge-endorsed). The COLP Modules are based upon Morrison (and therefore, by implication, also endorsed), and usually offer more detailed explanation. The COLP Modules, unlike Morrison, also provide full solutions to every exercise at the back of each book, not simply the final, numerical answer.
The Higher IGCSE Mathematics Foundation Module is the first part of an obsolete, five-module AS+ (Pure Mathematics 1 to 3)-equivalent course that followed on directly from the six IGCSE COLP Modules. The Foundation Module is divided into six Units, each corresponding to a summary and slight extension of one of the six IGCSE COLP modules.
The HIGCSE Module, first, and then Morrison are recommended as supplementary to the COLP Modules for the more academically-inclined student, mainly because it facilitates, on a more subliminal level, broader development of pattern recognition, the fundamental requirement for doing Mathematics.
Using these optional books in parallel with, and supplementary to the COLP Modules, will give a broader perspective on the content by means of alternative, yet often closely comparable, and extended presentations and exercises. This ensures greater understanding for the home-instruction student, not just of the content in itself, but of mathematical communication in general. The importance of the development of this skill of reading (and eventually writing) Mathematics for oneself without misunderstanding, cannot be over-stated – particularly if the student intends to take Mathematics beyond the IGCSE level, and also considering the experience of many facilitators and students – and evidence from past papers and syllabi – that the Cambridge academic standard gradually increases from year to year.
The COLP Modules and Morrison do not offer an over-abundance of practice exercises. The exercises that they do offer are sufficient to consolidate the student's basic understanding - if the student repeats each and every one of them until all have been completed correctly, knowing exactly why they are to be done as they are, with guidance from the solutions in the back of the books. This is not an impossible task - but it is actually minimally required. This basic understanding is however not sufficient for examination purposes.
This is why the academic calendar has been set up in two parts: (1) based upon the COLP Modules, with reference to corresponding content in the HIGCSE Module and Morrison, but (2) also focusing on further enhancement by broadening and deepening of the student's knowledge and skills by means of sufficient, repeated exercise in past paper drill work - with reference to mark schemes and examiners' reports - from approximately the middle of the third term onwards, for about two months of solid revision before the final external exams.

The HIGCSE Modules are recommended as supplementary to the endorsed textbooks because they present directly-related content in simpler and more detailed terms, similar in format to the more familiar IGCSE COLP Modules.

This Xcel spreadsheet contains many sheets of various forms of multiplication and division table tests. Simply press the F9 button to generate new, randomized tests. There is even a sheet on which the range of tables to be tested, can be set. The tests do not have to be limited to the default 3 to 12 times tables. Each test sheet contains six groups of ten questions each. It should be the student's goal to complete a sheet in not more than two minutes without the use of a calculator. Use the Email Contact Form on the Contact Us page if any difficulty arises.
Fermat's Last Theorem
A beautiful, true - must-see - modern-day fairy tale, well-composed in simple language, of how even the greatest mathematicians sometimes make mistakes, but don't let their mistakes get the better of them. It serves as a perfect illustration of the trial-and-error principle advocated by Tim Harford in the video at the top of the page. (This video also shows what real mathematicians look like, how they behave, what they do, and how they do it in their natural habitat.)
The man shown, is Goro Shimura of Taniyama-Shimura fame, and who is quoted (from time 12:30 in this video) by Tim Harford in the "Trial, error and the God complex" video at the top of the page.

Perhaps a word about Science kits is in order here...
Fun Kitchen-Science is probably the best way to introduce and cultivate an interest in Science during the early and middle years up to grade 9. High-Level Precision-Science, however, is what is required in high-school practical examinations from grade 10 onwards. This distinction must be made loud and clear.
If a student intends to purchase a Science kit specifically in order to prepare themselves to write a Physics or Chemistry practical examination paper eventually, they should ensure, perhaps at least a year in advance before they write the examination, that they know exactly what kind of experiments they will be required to perform in the examination, and that any Science kits that might be purchased, actually contain sufficient equipment and instructions for use that will prepare them properly for the intended examination. Reference to syllabi and past papers, as well as a knowledgeable study facilitator's input in this regard would be best.
Most high school Physics and Chemistry practical examinations require high-tech, accurate, precision-measuring laboratory equipment that is usually not included in an assemble-it-yourself Kitchen-Science kit, because such precision laboratory equipment just simply cannot be manufactured as cheaply as kitchenware. Practical Science examinations is not just merely about large-scale observation anymore, but about accurate and precise, error-limited, micro-level measurement.
The best, generally-affordable Precision-Science laboratory that might be available in South Africa, is probably Somerset Educational's Physics, Chemistry and Biology Microscience Laboratory Kits that provide more than sufficient equipment and instructions to conduct more than the required South African high-school practical work. Make no mistake: even though Microscience might be relatively cheap and small, the accuracy and precision of the equipment compare astonishingly well with ordinary, full-sized laboratory equipment. However, it is still to be determined whether Microscience is sufficient for Cambridge practical examinations, or not.
For full-sized, proper laboratory equipment, BMS Education probably offers the best, and best-priced, range in South Africa. However, the stuff needed to fit out a sufficient, full-sized laboratory, still doesn't sit in every man's back pocket.
The best way to deal with grade 10+ practical examination preparation, is probably to find a facilitator with their own properly-equipped laboratory, who will set up a work schedule that will allow the student to practice, on a regular basis, completing successfully all available past practical papers.

http://fsms.co.za - 20 Free Internet SMSs per day to most any phone on any SA network any time from any computer or recent mobile phone. Quick-Install Opera Mini Web Browser from the following url: m.opera.com (no "www"; "http://" unnecessary). Opera Mini is particularly useful on older phones with limited internet browsing capabilities. (Internet connection is considerably cheaper than standard SMS rates.)
https://www.vodacom.co.za/portal/site/myaccount/template.VCOMLOGIN - Vodacom also offers 20 Free Internet SMSs per day, but only from one Vodacom number to another. Use this to contact your Vodacom contacts, and FSMS for all your other contacts. (MTN and Cell C might offer similar services.)
40 Free SMSs per day is quite a bit of communication... Remind clients of appointments and account info, reschedule meetings, etc. Not everybody walks around with their email in their pocket, but almost everybody's got instant SMS on their cell phones.
